Genesis Global: Statement regarding integration with Swedish self-exclusion registerReading Time: 2 minutes

Genesis Global can confirm that it has successfully implemented an integration to the Swedish self-exclusion register Spelpaus.

Following the introduction of the new Swedish iGaming legislation on 1 January 2019, Genesis Global received a number of incoming contacts from Swedish players claiming that they were allowed to register and play on Genesis websites despite the fact that they had self-excluded themselves on Spelpaus. Receiving those complaints, Genesis technological team immediately initiated an investigation in order to identify the source of the fault and found out that there was a failure in a 3rd party’s system integrating to Spelpaus. Once that was identified, all technological teams were allocated, being a top priority, to find an alternative and immediate solution for direct integration to Spelpaus.

Genesis Global is in a position to confirm that it has identified and deployed the fix into production which is already implemented and operational throughout all its brands. The solution will meet all the requirements based on Chapter 14, § 12 of the Gambling Act (2018: 1138). Genesis Global has contacted and refunded all the concerned players together with closing all the accounts which were monitored, as required by the regulation. Genesis shall not profit from this failure that has affected these self-excluded players.

Genesis always takes compliance and responsible gambling at the core of its business operations in order to ensure a safe gaming environment to its players. Therefore, any regulation requirements and guidelines are being treated as highest priority.

Kim Phan Quits BlizzardReading Time: 1 minute

Blizzard’s global esports director Kim Phan has left Blizzard to pursue a “new endeavour” in the gaming industry. She did not harbor ill will against Blizzard in her farewell post, but the move came just under a month after Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer left for Epic Games.

On top of the departures of Phan and Nanzer, there have been rumours of low morale and additional resignations. The company also scuttled Heroes of the Storm esports plans in December. Stability is not Blizzard’s strong suit at the moment, even if efforts like Overwatch League continue to draw in large crowds.

Spain's CEJUEGO Releases “Gaming and Society” ReportReading Time: 1 minute

CEJUEGO, Spain’s leading gaming trade association, has released its “Gaming and Society” report. As per the report, 9 out of 10 adults in Spain see gambling as an acceptable pastime and 29 million people played at least one type of gambling modality last year. The study was carried out by the Institute of Politics and Governance at the Carlos III University of Madrid.

The study shows that 92% of some of the people surveyed see gaming as leisure. Approximately 6.6 million people (which represent 20% of the population in Spain) visited a casino, bingo or gambling facility in 2018. Moreover, it was detailed that the rate of problem gambling was 0.3% of the Spanish adult population.

“Regarding the games managed by private operators, the analysis concludes that they attracted more restricted audiences of different generations, highlighting that their clients are divided into those who play out of curiosity and those who play as a hobby and because they offer them spaces to socialise with friends and acquaintances,” a spokesperson for CEJUEGO said.

Approximately 1.5 million people gambled online during the study period which represents 0.9% of the total population in Spain. “This group shows dispersed behaviour patterns, from those who play stably to those who do it out of curiosity or who bet on an exciting game. The behaviour of these users indicates that they have learned how to play online and rationalise their use – shorter sessions, moderate monthly spending or decreases in the playing of some games,” CEJUEGO said.
